Should you have a separate bank account from your spouse?

This topic has been debated for some time now. Should you have a separate bank account from your spouse? When you get married you become one, but does that mean your finances as well?

There is an old saying that says "what's yours is mine and what's mine is mine."

Let's explore this together. Before you put your finances together here are some things you should think about.

Know your partner's money habit

Everyone is not good with finances. Some people are natural spenders ,and some are natural savers. Do you know which one your spouse is?

Do your financial goals align?

What do you want your finances to look like? Discuss how much needs to be in your emergency fund. What does retirement look like in the future?

Do you and your spouse have the same financial dreams in the future? If your not sure have a dream meeting. Write down what you want your finances to look like it the future. Financial goals will help you and your spouse get on the same page.

Communication (budget meeting)

A survey done by Ramsey Solutions says having money fights in a marriage is the second leading cause for divorce (Cole, 2018). Communication is important in any relationship. You and your spouse should be able to communicate about finances without it being a screaming match. A good thing to do each month is to have a budget meeting. A budget meeting will become a routine and make it easier to discuss finances.

Finances don't have to be a complicated topic. If you haven't discussed your finances with your spouse, it's time. Now go talk, you did sign up for forever, right?
